MISSION, Texas — A reported kidnapping in Mission escalated into an officer involved shooting Wednesday afternoon, leaving one police officer injured and two suspects in custody, according to local authorities.
The incident unfolded near the IBC Bank located at 121 South Shary Road, where Mission Police officers were dispatched following emergency calls reporting a possible abduction in progress. Officers arrived at the scene shortly after 2 p.m. and made contact with two individuals inside a white vehicle believed to be connected to the reported kidnapping.
During the encounter, authorities say the situation rapidly intensified when one of the suspects allegedly opened fire on responding officers, striking at least one Mission police officer. Officers returned fire, wounding one suspect, who was transported to a local hospital for treatment. A second suspect was taken into custody at the scene without injury.
City officials later confirmed that the injured officer sustained non life threatening injuries and is expected to recover. Law enforcement also emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public, and the scene was secured shortly after the confrontation.
While the suspects are in custody, details regarding the alleged kidnapping itself remain limited. Authorities have not released information about the identity or condition of the reported victim, nor have they disclosed the events that led to the initial kidnapping call. Formal charges have not yet been announced.
As is standard procedure in cases involving the discharge of a firearm by law enforcement, the Texas Rangers have assumed responsibility for investigating the officer involved shooting, while the Mission Police Department continues to investigate the reported kidnapping.
Portions of Shary Road were temporarily closed for several hours as investigators processed the scene, causing traffic disruptions in the area. All roadways were later reopened.
Officials are urging anyone with additional information related to the incident to contact (956)-584-5000 Mission Police, as the investigation continues.
